The activities for this unit are centered around the Magic Treehouse #13 Vacation Under The Volcano
PART 1: Text Analysis and Book Launch (BEFORE READING ACTIVITIES)
This includes a short summary of a section of the book, an analysis of the hybrid text elements, your identification of main ideas and potential big ideas, and a purposeful book launch with a short script of what you would ask/say to activate and build prior knowledge and set a purpose for reading. Please Copy/Paste the text of your file into a "New" File in the MTH Book Launch Google Drive Folder so I can add comments to your work. Do not just drag your file into the folder.
PART 2: Generating high level comprehension questions (DURING READING ACTIVITIES) Using the text analysis you did in Part 1, write comprehension questions you want students to answer (either in a discussion group, on a Flipgrid, or in a journal) for your assigned section of the book. Your questions should require students to move beyond literal recall of small details and encourage them to see the connections (explicit and implicit) between details in ways that moves them closer to comprehending important events linked to the problem/solution or observations about the characters. They should also tap into some of the during reading comprehension strategies that good readers use to make sense of text.
PART 3: Creating four related activities (DURING/AFTER READING ACTIVITIES)
For this part of your unit, you will create four additional activities for students to complete as you cycle through rounds of guided reading groups. These will include: 1) vocabulary activity; 2) fluency activity (e.g., podcast); 3) character traits activity; and 4) anticipation guide.
PART 4: Creating extension activities and a curriculum map (AFTER READING ACTIVITIES) For this final part of the unit guide, you will work with a partner to think about the whole story. Then, you will develop a central question, curate a set of five related resources, create a unit extension map and describe two activities (one for each person).
STORE THE PIECES OF YOUR UNIT: It's helpful if you create a folder on your computer and put all of your related resources into that folder.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER: Now, you will combine all four parts of your MTH unit into a Blendspace. You can use Dr. Deeney's screencast tutorial to show you how to make a Blendspace lesson. Then, you copy/paste the link to your Blendspace into this Google Docs chart so others (including Dr. Coiro) can access your unit activities.
Here's the sequence of files you should organize in your Blendspace: (please make sure your Blendspace Filename begins with your LAST NAME) 1. MTH Part 1: Book Launch and MTH Part 2: During Reading Questions 3. MTH Part 3: Four B/D/A Activities 4. MTH Part 4: Curriculum Map (Pdf of Popplet) 4. MTH Part 4: Resource 1 5. MTH Part 4: Resource 2 6. MTH Part 4: Resource 3 7. MTH Part 4: Resource 4 8. MTH Part 4: Resource 5 9. MTH Part 4: Unit Activities
